DAY 3 | FULL DAY: EMBERÁ PURU BIAKIRU INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY
The tour begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel. Then we head toward Chagres National Park, a journey of approximately one hour. Once there, we will board traditional wooden canoes, piraguas, operated by our friends, the Emberá people, who will take us from Lake Alajuela to the Chagres River. These two water sources are of great importance to Panama City and to the operation of the Panama Canal. During the 40-minute boat ride, you will be able to admire the splendid rainforest and, with some luck, spot monkeys, butterflies, herons, and turtles. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the chief of the community, who will share the history of the tribe and its rich cultural traditions. The Emberá are natives of the Darién Province and have ancestral roots in Chocó, Colombia. They live along the riverbanks in small communities of stilt houses with palmthatched roofs called tambos, designed to prevent humidity and flooding. The men are dedicated to building the famous piraguas, canoes carved from logs used for navigation even during the dry season. The women create baskets, plates, and masks using plant fibers and fine handwoven techniques, and they wear chaquiras, necklaces made from old silver coins. At the end of the community visit, you will take a short boat ride to a small island inhabited by monkeys. Afterwards, a traditional lunch will be served, followed by a folkloric performance featuring traditional music and dances.
